Artist Statement

“Art must instill a sense of beauty, nostalgia, appreciation, or other connection that sparks the mind into an artistic adventure.” – Jerri

About

2017 Xena on Thanksgiving Day.jpg

Jerri Phillips is a Windsor, SC, resident originally from Palmetto, Florida. Her lifetime love of horses, cattle and nature are expressed in her paintings. Her artistic mission is to preserve the history of such for future generations. She paints primarily in acrylic and oil on canvas or board, recently expanding her repertoire to include life-sized fiberglass statues.

She participated in the “Ponce DeLeon Herd of Seven” art project juried by the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art for the Great Florida Cattle Drive and Florida Cow Culture Preservation Committee to Celebrate 500 years of cattle in America. Her painting depicting the history of cattle is displayed on a life-sized Florida Cracker Bull statue named “Quinientos” along with six other bulls painted by artists. They will be sold December 2022 in Kenansville, FL, at the end of the historic cattle drive. Her current mobile “Windsor Bull Art Project” was funded in part through the Greater Augusta Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts so that it may be shown to the public for art enrichment. This project is a restored life-sized statue of a Hereford bull painted with scenes of Windsor.

She is a member of Aiken Artists Guild, Aiken Center for the Arts and The Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta. She was Past President of the Parrish Arts Council in Florida. She attended courses at Ringling College of Art & Design and St. Pete College in addition to taking master workshops. Her work has been exhibited in Aiken, Windsor and North Augusta as well as Sarasota, Anna Maria Island, Bradenton, Parrish, Palmetto, St. Petersburg, Tampa, Gulfport, Arcadia, Micanopy and Kissimmee, Florida. She and her husband, John, have owned and operated "Artistic Florida" guitar and art studios with an art gallery before relocating.

In the future, Jerri plans to begin teaching private art classes as well as workshops in addition to exhibiting her work.

More history...

Her artistic adventure began from the inspiration of her artist mom who was her mentor. Together they continued their education, became professional artists showing in festivals, exhibitions and being actively involved in art promotion in their community. Jerri and her husband, John, are a dedicated artistic couple who opened their own art gallery and guitar studio in Parrish, Florida. They closed the gallery and studio to move to Aiken and continue their work from home in  Windsor.

Jerri took up the challenge to ride the coast to coast 142-mile Florida Cracker Trail from Bradenton to Fort Pierce by horseback. This was followed by an art exhibition showcasing the history of the trail. She was also juried and commissioned to paint one of seven life-sized fiberglass bulls as an

ambassador to promote the history of Ponce de Leon’s “Herd of 7” that celebrate five-hundred years of cattle in America with The Great Florida Cattle Drive in December 2021. She is expanding her

mission to promote the horse culture in Aiken.
