This painting was inspired by historical Florida Cracker, Archie Rutledge, 1913-1981, who lived in Manatee County.
"McCoy" was inspired by an early 1900's post card of a cattle round up near Fort McCoy, Florida. My goal was to show what "McCoy" and his horse might look like in color.
This subject came from my design of the 2016 Heritage Day U.S. Postal cancellation stamp for the historical Palmetto post office at the Palmetto Historical Park. The Manatee Agricultural Museum building appears in the background in a scene where Archie is seen wrestling the steer.
The Harllee barn stood off of Route 19 in Palmetto. I photographed it back in the 1990's and created a painting from that photo in 2012. The barn replica with some original materials stands at the Manatee County Fairgrounds currently.
Painted en plein air at Brown's Grove Farmer's Market in Parrish, Florida.
The Eastern Meadowlark is a beautiful accent to farm fields and pastures in Florida.
